1 Month and 4 Weeks!

It is exactly 1 month and 4 weeks till I land back home. I'm really excited to be almost complete my teaching training. I have two more assignments left to submit and 4 weeks of placement to go! Currently, I am half way through a two week break from placement. Which is wonderful, time for planning lessons and finishing my assignments. I am not enjoying teaching year 2. I definitely, am not feeling the magic and connection that I have with teens.
I don't like having to give specific instructions to the year 2 students about EVERYTHING!
Typical Day in Year 2
"You take your piece of paper with your flower on it and you cut it out like this." Ms. N
"I don't have scissors?" Tommy
"Tommy, you can share with a friend." Ms. N
"I'm bad at cutting Ms." Sammy
"That's okay, give it your best try!" Ms. N
*Sammy comes up to me with his flower cut in half*
"No, worries Sammy we will tape that up and it will be good as new." Ms. N
"Tommy poked me in my eye with his Harry Potter wand." Sammy
"Tommy, you know your suppose to keep that in your bag during class. Say sorry to Sammy and put it away. Sammy, go to the sick bay." Ms. N
*Meanwhile 10 children are pulling on each arm of my sweater asking me to go over how to cut out their flower or letting me know someone was mean to them*
I didn't have to teach a lot of math last placement and this placement I have to teach a math lesson to the class, then have custom math activities for the four ability groups and the spend time teaching the  two of  lower ability groups. Its a lot to handle!
Went to see my year 7/8's from last placement, they put on the musical Seussical Jr. They hit the musical out of the park! They integrated building the sets into their math lessons and painting designs on the set into Art. I was really impressed by how far they had come with their acting and singing. At the end of the musical the Whos from whoville ran out and gave me hugs, saying, "Ms. N you didn't think we forgot about you, did you?" So sweet of them.

Placement

Hi Everyone, This is the last week of classes. Many assignments are due this week so, its been filled with late nights, unhealthy food choices and tears.   Tomorrow, I get to meet to my year 2 class and my two teaching associates. Year 2 in New Zealand is  the eqivalent to Grade 1 in Canada. It will be quite the change from teaching year 7/8. The school is about a 45 minute bus ride a way. The class is a single cell opposed to a collabertive learning enivornment which I taught in last time.  I am looking forward to placement, it officially starts next Monday. My time in New Zealand has flown by. I'm trying, even in these stressful times to enjoy my life here and take in as much as I can. Really, looking forward to returning home this December and relaxing with my family and cat soon.  Hugs, Nora

Gondolas, Earthquakes and Beaches, Oh My!

Monday January 22, 2018 On Friday some of the Canadians and I took a hike up or took a gondola (cable car) up Mount Cavendish located near Port Hills. The majority of the Canadians decided to hike up the steep Bridal Path to the top of Mount Cavendish. I, on the other hand, took one look of the mountain and realized I was not in shape  enough for that and took the gondola for $28.00 NZ (return trip). At the top of the mountain is a viewing deck and café. If you look West you can see Christchurch.  To the South and East there are views of Banks Peninsula, Lake Ellesmere and Lyttelton Harbor. I’m hoping by the end of my year in New Zealand to be able to hike up the mountain. Downtown!

Thursday January 25, 2018 This week I went to downtown Christchurch for the first time. I attend the busker festival, looked at the container mall and had lunch at one of the many food trucks. The downtown has a lot of construction going on because it is still rebuilding itself after the 2011 earthquake which destroyed buildings and killed 185 people.
